Asbestos Removal Methods
Most commonly found in buildings constructed before the mid-1980s, asbestos backed vinyl sheet flooring and vinyl tiles containing asbestos were used in housing and commercial buildings. Asbestos backed vinyl sheeting must be removed by an “A Class” asbestos removalist. Depending on the asbestos flooring removal method, a “B Class” asbestos removalist may remove the asbestos vinyl tiles.
There is a low risk of exposure to asbestos if the asbestos flooring remains undamaged due to the asbestos backing being sealed from the atmosphere by the overlaying vinyl. However, if the asbestos flooring has been damaged and needs to be removed, it is important that this asbestos material is removed safely.
When removing asbestos containing materials you are prohibited from using power tools with an abrasive mechanism. By using FoamShield™ you can be assured that your asbestos is being removed in the safest possible manner.
Traditional methods of removing asbestos involve encapsulation of the area requiring plastic containment, negative air units, generators, decontamination units, full face positive air masks etc. The asbestos floors would then be removed using electrical jackhammers and by dry grinding the floor. Even though the area has been contained and the outside public are safe from exposure, workers inside the containment are relying on negative air and personal protection equipment only.
With the use of FoamShield™, the asbestos hazard is isolated and the workers are protected. This is achieved by applying foam to the asbestos flooring surface prior to removal to ensure any fibres released are captured. In addition, further foam is applied as tiles are lifted using scrapers to encapsulate asbestos particles.
FoamShield™ has also developed a mastic remover which enables mastic to be easily removed with the need for dry grinding. This method effectively eliminates asbestos fibre release within the enclosed area.
Test results have proven this method to be safer, and FoamShield™ users have reported that their project completion times have been greatly reduced.
FoamShield™ Asbestos Tile Removal Method
Following is FoamShield’s easy removal method which eliminates the spread of asbestos particles.
Using the FoamShield™ Fogger, the area is misted to ensure that any asbestos particles already in the air become encapsulated.
Using either a 4 or 5.5 litre foamer, foam is applied to the tile surface prior to removal to ensure any fibres released are encapsulated.
After coating the tiles with foam, the tiles are removed using scrapers. During this process, further foam is applied to ensure encapsulation of asbestos fibres is achieved.
Tiles are removed and bagged as asbestos waste.
